— When someone offers the clothes off their back, it is seen as a sign of friendship and compassion. Usually it is just a cliché remark but for Wes Faulk, pastor of Western Heights Baptist Church, and his congregation, it’s an outreach ministry.

Western Heights held a Clothes Closet. Clothes Closet is a community outreach. “We have everything set up, all people have to do is come down and get what they need,” Faulk said. “We don’t ask any questions.”
Western Heights has the outreach once a year. This year however, the event has been extended because of a surplus in clothing available. Faulk said, “We gave about half of it away already.”
The outreach began as a church project but once word got out donations where left at the door of the church.
“The more we do it, the more we get,” Faulk said. “We have had bags dropped off just about everyday.”
Faulk said winter clothing is the top priority. “With the cold stint we had, we really needed warm, lightly used jackets to help people,” Faulk said.

Faulk said the turnout was good this year but he did not have an exact number of people who benefited from the outreach.

“Usually we hand out registration cards or something to track how many people we have, but this year we decided not to. We didn’t want people to not come just because they had to fill something out,” he said. “We did see a steady stream of people though. It’s not about the numbers, it’s all about helping people.”

Faulk shared a story about a young mother who benefited from the outreach.
“She found several pieces of clothes for her daughter, then later she came back with her daughters old clothes,” Faulk said. “That’s what this is all about, people seeing a need and filling that need.”

The church continued the outreach through this week. Western Heights is offering the clothes from 9 a.m. to noon today and Friday at the church located at 2305 W. Beech in Duncan.
