Happy Chick-Fil-A day!!!! Ferb, I know what we’re going to do today…. We’re going to eat more chicken! I am truly glad that there are businesses like Chick-Fil-A who are not ashamed to stand for values they believe in. I have been amazed by the amount of my friends who have come out to support this business.
Yesterday morning I was leading a bible study at Chick-Fil-A when I had an thought. What if in this whole Chick-Fil-A mess we as churches settle for a good cause while ignoring our best purpose. Let me try to explain. Defending traditional marriage is a good thing. Defending traditional values is also a good thing. These causes though, are not the best things. These causes often distract us from our primary purpose.
When you look at scripture the cultural warriors were not the Christians. When you find zeal for protecting traditional values Christians were not at the forefront of the pack. Who then were the culture warriors? When it came to establishing values and pushing them on people,it was often the pharisees who took center stage. When it came to political activism the Sadducees we front and center.
Where then were the Christians? How should we react today? The early Christians were not about moral causes, they were about the spread of the gospel. The gospel has a far greater effect on a society. The gospel changes hearts not just actions.
The news of the day will be that many people took a stand for traditional marriage. That’s wonderful. The only problem with it though is its not my stand, nor is it the churches. Jesus never commanded his church to go and moralize the world. He called them to spread the good news of a savior who was our righteousness when our righteousness couldn’t cut it.
Today I will probably eat a Chick-Fil-A sandwich. Most of you who read my blog will do the same. Kudos to Dan Cathy. When you are eating your peanut oil drenched chicken ask yourself this question, do I have the same zeal for sharing my faith as I do protecting my favorite chicken sandwich?
My great fear in all of this is the church and believers will settle for a good lesser message while forgetting our God given primary message.
