I Was So Busy Doing Church, I Missed God

God has been doing big things in my heart recently. He has been leading me to a dependency on him that had worn down over time. Life is busy. Since moving to Houston it has just gotten busier. When I lived in Oklahoma, I woke up around 6:30am every day got ready and studied at the office. Here I wake up around 4:00am every day to study because often the office does not afford me that time.

In this new pace of life, I feel far more fulfilled in my job. I get to meet with people and help them find gospel solutions for their lives. I get to lead a church in rediscovering the gospel. In all of this I have noticed that I have allowed my own spiritual health to decline. When I study, I do not study to grow in a relationship with God, I study because I need to reload for the next bible study or sermon. In the time consuming work of doing church I have noticed a decline in my own spiritual condition.

This past week while studying for Sunday morning’s sermon, God spoke to me through one of the harder things Jesus ever says. In the book of John, Jesus says “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” One of the great temptations in my life is to spend countless hours studying scripture, investing in others and building the church while missing the meat of my calling, knowing Jesus Christ.

God has worked in my life this week. He has brought me back to understand that if all of my labor does not lead to a relationship with Him, then it is time spent in vain.

When I was contemplating what to share with you this morning as you are getting ready to come to church and worship, it hit me that we all probably struggle in this way. We all can spend hours and hours in the rush of life fully missing the point of life, a relationship with God Himself. We can spend great amounts of time and energy in church missing the relationship we are created for.

Today, do not miss what God is going to do in your life. In a day full of seeing friends, studying scripture, praying and responding in praise, do not miss the relationship God has ready for you. If we miss God today, everything we do will be for not.

I’m ready to get to know God, will you join me?
