At Memorial Baptist Church we strive to be a church that is not about us. At Memorial Baptist Church our aim is to be a church that is all about Jesus.
Over the past few months I have been pondering what a church whose aim is to be all about Jesus would look like.
- It would be a church defined by its humility.
One of the great traps any church can fall into is when people begin to believe that the church exists to please them. In this trap they come together and ask what the church offers them for the tithes that they pay whether in programs, entertainment or music. When a church is all about Jesus, its people don’t come to make much of themselves, they come to make much of Jesus.
- It would be a church that finds its mission in Jesus’ mission.
I don’t believe that a church can be all about Jesus if its first priority is not connecting to people who don’t know Jesus. A church that is all about Jesus is going to want to make Jesus’ mission first priority. It will be intentional in all that it does. It will purposely get outside of its building so as to meet new people and bring them to the savior. Not only will it go out, but it will also intentionally create an environment inside which makes it easy for a new person to hear the gospel. This goes back to the first mark… The church would willing give up its preferences because their desire is first to accomplish Jesus mission.
I’ll have more later in the week, but I wanted to give you the first two today. What do you think?
